that will be that! Anderson seals it in style! Half-tracker on middle and leg. Anderson skips down the track and wallops it over deep mid wicket. Does not exactly fly into the stands, but clears the rope by just enough. The Hurricanes lift themselves off the foot of the table, and in fact, move up to fifth!
Thunder vs Hurricanes, 21st Match at Hobart, BBL 2023, Jan 01 2024 - Match Result
Hurricanes won by 7 wickets (with 11 balls remaining)
7:20pm Right. That brings us to the end of our coverage for this game. There is another BBL game scheduled for the day, although it is yet to begin with rain playing spoilsport. Join Andrew McGlashan for all the updates from that top-of-the-table clash between the Brisbane Heat and the Sydney Sixers. Until next time, this is goodbye from Raghav, Vairavan and me. Take care, folks!
Chris Jordan is the Player of the Match, here is what he has to say: It was a bit of a must-win game for us, kind of a knockout situation. To restrict them to 150, we were happy and then the boys knocked it off - overall a great effort. We try not to hit panic stations. We have not hit our mark as well as we would have liked but we know the potential in our team. Any bowling line-up coming up against him (Ben McDermott), he will always be feared. (On the upcoming matches) We are on the road for three games or so, and it can be a good period for the team to galvanise and get some hard away wins. We will take the win tonight and take every game as it comes.
7:11pm A fairly comfortable win for the Hurricanes in the end. There was a brief patch, when both Wade and Jewell were dismissed in close succession, where it felt their chase might get derailed. That, though, turned out to be a slight aberration. McDermott, returning to the side, starred with an unbeaten 53 off 34 balls, while Wright did his bit too, smashing 34 off 25.
Lots to ponder for the Sydney Thunder, meanwhile. They have now won only once in six games, and they might be entering last-ditch territory very soon, if they have not already. Their batters failed to show up, and that put extra pressure on their bowlers. They did well to hang on for parts, but the Power Surge, which brought about 22 runs, definitively turned the scales in the hosts' favour, and the Hurricanes did not look back.
The Hurricanes one hit away from their second win of the season. McAndrew to bowl what could be the final over of this game. Anderson on strike. Right-arm around
wow, what power! Another slower ball but this time, McDermott has telegraphed it. Gets into position and bludgeons it back past the bowler. Nearly took out the umpire too. Gets to his fifty as well, off just 34 balls!
change of pace, bowled right in the slot outside off. McDermott reaches out for it and drives it straight to extra cover
full and wide outside off. Anderson drills it straight to extra cover. Too hot to handle for the fielder and a slight misfield allows a run
full toss outside off and Anderson, believe it or not, lets it go
Around the wicket now
another bumper, this time on leg stump. Anderson has a massive swipe across the line and is beaten for pace. That whistled through!
dug in short but the line is outside leg. Called a wide. Hatcher is not happy but not sure he has a case
full outside off. McDermott punches it to mid off and saunters across to the other end
Hatcher to bowl his third. 13 needed off 18
how has he found the gap?! Slower delivery hung up on a length outside off. McDermott has a wild swish at it and slices it. Somehow, though, he manages to get it to drop between extra cover, deep cover point and backward point. Extra cover was the closest to it
slow and short outside off. Anderson chalks his attempted pull and then hares across to the other end as the ball dribbles towards point
another slower bouncer outside off. Anderson is too early into the pull and misses it by some distance
streaky! Slower bumper on middle and leg. Climbs onto Anderson because of the tennis-ball bounce and gets big on him. Cannot control the pull and it flicks the glove, looping over the keeper's head!
banged into the track outside off. Anderson hops up onto his toes and jabs it towards backward point
Anderson walks in at 5
picks out long off to perfection! Off-pace on a length outside off. Wright wants to go inside out, possibly over long off. Does not go through with it fully, though, and all he does is offer some catching practice to Hales. A wicket too late for the Sydney Thunder?
19 off 24. Sams to bowl out
super shot! Floated up and hung outside off. For a brief moment, it seems that McDermott has backed away too far, but manages to carve it over extra cover for four!
Neal : "HH have this under control. They look set to jump three places to fifth from last. What a start to 2024."
full on leg stump. Wright clears his front leg and drags it towards deep mid wicket
back of a length just outside off. McDermott knocks it down the ground to long off
darted down the leg side. Wright swings it away towards short fine leg for one. He will feel he missed out there...
flighted up very full on leg stump. Wright jams it out into the on side
slides it into the pads first up. McDermott does not make contact as the ball rolls away off his body for a leg bye
Sangha is back. Perhaps the final roll of the dice...
