Roy Torrens was a brisk medium-pace bowler whose height made him a difficult proposition at club and international level. He was also a useful hard-hitting lower-order batsman, once thrashing 177 in an hour in a club game. In all, he played 30 times for Ireland taking 77 wickets at 25.66, with his best performance coming against Scotland in 1974 when he took 7 for 40 in a 52-run win. After retiring to take up running a guest house, he remained in the game as a local administrator and then national selector, and in 2000 he was president of the ICU. In 2004 he took over as manager of the Ireland side. A good footballer, he won three amateur caps for Northern Ireland.
