A swing bowling allrounder, David Brown graduated from the Lancashire Leagues to the county's Second XI before heading off to Durham University, where he represented their UCCE team, as well as playing for British Universities and going on a couple of MCC tours. After completing his education it was to Nevil Road, rather than Old Trafford, that he travelled as a cricketer, and after impressing in Gloucestershire's Second XI he was signed on a 12-week trial basis by the county ahead of the 2006 season. That was updated to a full professional contract, but Brown was released by the club at the end of 2009, a year before his contract expired, after struggling for many first-team opportunities.
The highlight of his four years at Gloucestershire came during the 2006 C&G Trophy when he hit 63 off 26 balls against Surrey. Indeed, it was in limited-overs cricket that most of his opportunities had come. He found a new home with Glamorgan, signing a two-year contract in November 2009, and remained primarily a short format cricketer.
