AUSTRALIA v PAKISTAN 1981-82

At Brisbane, November 27, 28, 29, 30, December 1. Australia won by ten wickets. Pakistan made three changes, Rizwan-uz-Zaman, Mansoor Akhtar and Iqbal Qasim being replaced by Mohsin Khan, Zaheer Abbas and Ijaz Faqih. However, despite protests from the touring party, the first-Test umpires, A. R. Crafter and M. W. Johnson, were retained.

On winning the toss, Chappell sent Pakistan in. After a slow but steady opening, they had declined to 111 for four before Zaheer Abbas and Wasim Raja added 125 for the fifth wicket, Raja batting breezily before skying an attempted hook. Zaheer drove, hooked and pulled splendidly to become top-scorer with 80, and Lillee claimed his 300th Test wicket in his 56th appearance for Australia.

On the second day, Laird and Wood opened well with a partnership of 109, the prelude to a brilliant 201 from Chappell, who was aided by useful contributions from Border, Hughes, Wellham and Marsh as the score reached 512 by declaration time. Mudassar Nazar and Mohsin Khan started Pakistan's second innings with a stand of 72; but once Mudassar had been well caught by Laird off a fine Lillee delivery, the fast bowler, helped by off-spinner Yardley, finished off Pakistan's innings in under four hours. With the resolution to be expected of a Test side, Pakistan would have saved the match which, poorly attended, attracted only 25,342 spectators.
