†AUSTRALIA v WEST INDIES 1981-82

At Sydney, November 24. Australia won by seven wickets. A fine innings by Laird, who had often been left out of Australian sides for one-day matches because he was thought to be too slow a scorer, took Australia to a remarkable victory. West Indies, given a good start, faltered in mid-innings, but a fourth-wicket stand of 72 between Richards and a superb Lloyd looked to have given them enough runs. Australia lost Darling and Chappell quickly, only for Laird and Border to give the innings a foundation. When Border was thrown out by Haynes, Hughes continued his splendid form of the previous ten days, he and Laird adding 147 and taking Australia to victory with two overs to spare. Having bowled only 49 overs in three and a half hours the Australians were fined $600 of their prize-money.

Man of the Match: B. M. Laird. Attendance: 27,008.
