South Africa v Australia, 2008-09

Wisden's review of South Africa v Australia, 5th ODI, 2008-09

Neil Manthorp
15-Apr-2010
At Johannesburg, April 17, 2009 (day/night). Australia won by 47 runs. Toss: South Africa.
At several stages of Australia's innings in their first one-day international at the Wanderers since the famous 872-run match of March 2006, it looked as if they might get close to their 434 that day: at 192 for two after 31 overs, 400 seemed distinctly possible. The top five all reached 40 at around a run a ball, but it was the inability of anyone to manage more than 66 that led to the total being only a touch over 300. It might have been even lower, as they lost five wickets for 54, but Mike Hussey and Hauritz again did a fine job, putting on 57 for the eighth wicket in the last nine overs. Gibbs led the chase with a delightful 82 until he missed a sweep against Hauritz and was lbw, and the South African innings began to decline from the heights of 150 for one. Kallis made 64 from just 69 balls - unusually well paced for him - but Hauritz and Johnson completed successful series by taking five wickets between them, and Australia secured a consolation victory.
Man of the Match: N. M. Hauritz. Man of the Series: A. B. de Villiers.
