It had been a lethargic Powerplay while Chennai were batting. Their in-form opener M Vijay, who treated his home crowd to two brutal innings over the past week, failed to replicate those efforts and Matthew Hayden, supposed to be Chennai's bruiser at the top of the order, was off-colour.
Enter Suresh Raina, who catalysed the innings with a couple of trademark hits, a carve over backward point for four and a powerful swat over wide long-on for six. There was also an edged four past the vacant slip region for four, and though Raina was dismissed soon after for 23, he had provided some of the impetus Chennai badly needed early in the match.
Then, he played his part with the ball as well. After Sachin Tendulkar retired due to dehydration, Ambati Rayudu, who has done so well for Mumbai in the tournament was batting with Saurabh Tiwary, another promising youngster. Raina broke that association by beating Rayudu with a short ball after seeing the batsman tear out of the crease; Rayudu missed the ball when attempting a loft down the ground and MS Dhoni had a simple stumping to send the batsman back. Mumbai's slide had started.
