The Indian squads for the tri-series in Malaysia and the Champions Trophy will be named on September 3 in Mumbai.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) stated that the squad for the tri-series in September could consist of 15 players while for the Champions Trophy in October, the provisional 30-member squad will be pruned to 14, as per the ICC's guidelines.
"We may select 15 players for the triangular series," Niranjan Shah, the BCCI secretary, said. "But the final team for the Champions Trophy, to be played at home, can consist of 14 players as per regulations laid down by the International Cricket Council."
The tri-series would mark the start of India's new international season, after the recent tour of Sri Lanka was disrupted by South Africa's pull-out of the Unitech Cup due to security concerns and inclement weather, which led to the cancellation of the three-match bilateral series against Sri Lanka. Only 22 balls were bowled on the tour, after rain washed out the first one-dayer in Colombo.
The BCCI later announced that India are likely to play a few practice matches against local sides with Chennai as the likely venue, before departing for Malaysia. Shah added: "I also have to talk to cricket authorities in Chennai and Bangalore before deciding on where to have the preparatory schedule for the team."
India will play their first match of the tri-series against West Indies on September 14 at the Kinrara Oval.
