India scraped home in a match of 662 runs, the most for any one-day international in India. But millions around the country were unable to follow the action, as a row simmered on between the public broadcasters (Doordarshan and All India Radio) and the private network Nimbus, the rights-holder for the series. It meant most of India missed Ganguly's imperious one-day return after 15 months out of favour, although his classy 98 was soon overshadowed by Chanderpaul's blazing undefeated 149. Lara's decision to field, and his choice of off-spinner Samuels as first change as early as the tenth over, raised eyebrows - they were later talking points in the matchfixing investigation - but the rock-hard surface ensured it was the batsmen's day. Ganguly and Gambhir amassed 144 by halfway, then Dhoni and Dravid pounded 119 off the last 12 overs. Gayle and Chanderpaul silenced the crowd with a violent start, and West Indies were within range after 40 overs: 100 needed, seven wickets in hand, Chanderpaul on 100 and Lara well set. But then came the clincher: Tendulkar anticipated Lara's charge, fired a seam-up delivery outside off, and earned the stumping that effectively sealed the match. Chanderpaul, who batted through the innings, won the hearts of the 40,000-odd spectators, but they were even happier that India won.
