England v Australia, Lord's

England v Australia, Lord's, NatWest Series Final 2005

15-Apr-2006
At Lord's, July 2. Tied. Toss: England.
A thrilling recovery by England resulted in a breathless tie, only the second between these sides and the 21st in all one-day internationals. When England slumped to 33 for five, chasing 197, every cricket fan in the country could be forgiven for thinking "here we go again". But as Collingwood and wicketkeeper Geraint Jones added 116, England dared to think of victory once more. The pair were separated only when Collingwood was run out, with 48 needed from 39 balls; Jones and his namesake Simon followed in the next two overs. But Giles and Gough brought the target down to ten off the last over, from McGrath, who started with a no-ball. Gough neededthree from two balls when he was run out going for a single. Giles survived an lbw appeal off the final ball, and a misfield by Lee at third man allowed him to scramble two leg-byes and tie the scores.
Australia had started fiercely, with Gilchrist and Hayden bringing 50 up in the seventh over. But once Gough broke through, Australia struggled, and were 93 for five at the halfway mark. Harmison and Flintoff took three apiece, and Geraint Jones made five catches, including a diving effort to dismiss Ponting, though Hussey swept up commendably with an unbeaten 62. Lee got a dressing-down from umpire Shepherd, standing in his last major match at Lord's, after he sent a beamer whistling past Trescothick's face in his second over. But there was no doubting Lee's quality when he produced a fine delivery that angled across the left-handed Strauss and came back in off the pitch; he and McGrath, aided by some rash strokes, soon had England in disarray before Collingwood and Jones mounted their remarkable rescue.
Man of the Match: G. O. Jones.
