Australia v Bangladesh, Old Trafford
Australia v Bangladesh, Old Trafford, NatWest Series 2005
15-Apr-2006
At Manchester, June 25. Australia won by ten wickets. Australia 6 pts. Toss: Australia.
As Ponting admitted later, far from exorcising the defeat at Cardiff, Australia's ten-wicket victory
- only their third in one-day internationals - made it even more perplexing. But Bangladesh were
left rudderless by coach Dav Whatmore's departure to attend his dying father in Melbourne.
Shahriar Nafees and Mohammad Ashraful were the only batsmen to reach double figures, and
four men failed to score as the last eight fell for 26; they had, said captain Habibul Bashar,
prepared for a pace attack, not spin. Symonds demonstrated his versatility by switching from seam
to off-breaks, and completed his rehabilitation with five for 18 to earn his second consecutive
match award. Gilchrist and Hayden both scored 66 to complete victory with 31 overs to spare.
For the players, the match was overshadowed by the death of Whatmore's father and news that
Shane Warne (yet to join Australia's squad as he had retired from one-day internationals) was
separating from his wife.
Man of the Match: A. Symonds.
