The former England batsman, Aftab Habib, has parted company with Essex in a bid to further his faltering career. Habib, who played two Tests against New Zealand in 1999, endured a modest season in 2004, and was not certain of having his contract renewed.
"Aftab is looking for a longer-term deal than we can offer him," said Essex's captain, Ronnie Irani, who admitted he was sad to be losing a batsman of Habib's quality. "The player is seeking a bit of long-term security and a couple of counties are said to be showing interest in him."
Habib joins the fringe bowlers, Adrian McCoubrey and Zoheb Sharif, in parting ways with Essex. There was better news, however, for James Foster, the former England wicketkeeper, and Will Jefferson, the opening batsman. They have both been offered new deals.
