MS Dhoni, who missed the Napier Test because of a back spasm he sustained on the eve of the match, is likely to return for the next game in Wellington. He went for an MRI scan and is okay, the stand-in captain, Virender Sehwag, has said.
Everybody was surprised when Sehwag walked out in a blazer two minutes before the toss. But he was told last night by the coach Gary Kirsten that he might have to captain the side in case Dhoni didn't recover. Dinesh Karthik, who last played in Sri Lanka last year, took over the keeping gloves.
Sehwag has led India once before, when he stood in for Rahul Dravid in Ahmedabad in 2005-06 and India won that match comfortably. But it was a tough day in charge for Sehwag as New Zealand recovered from 23 for 3 to post 351 for 4, boosted by centuries from Ross Taylor and Jesse Ryder.
