New Zealand have been dealt another injury blow after Jesse Ryder, their hard-hitting opening batsman, was ruled out of the one-day series against England. He has failed to recover from severing his tendon when he put his hand through a toilet window in Christchurch.
Ryder made a big impression against England in February when his 196 runs at 49 - at a strike-rate of 91 - were a key part of New Zealand's series victory. It was while he was celebrating the win that he injured himself, and he later gave a remorseful press conference.
It was always going to be touch and go for Ryder and he has only started hitting soft balls again in the nets this week. His place in the one-day squad goes to Peter Fulton, while Ryder will now join New Zealand's Emerging Players squad over the next few months, with the aim of being fit for the Champions Trophy in September.
"He feels it probably more with catching than anything else, in particular reverse cup where it seems to go straight through to the nerve, so he finds that increasingly uncomfortable," coach John Bracewell told NZPA.
"We've decided to ease back on him and bring him back through the emerging players programme, and looking towards the Champions Trophy, introduce him through some lower key cricket and get him more cricket fit."
New Zealand have endured bad few days with injuries. Daniel Flynn is undergoing cosmetic surgery after the blow he took in the mouth from James Anderson in the second Test at Old Trafford. Flynn lost two teeth and was unable to take any further part in the Test after the first day, even though he was keen to bat again in the second innings, after continuing to feel nauseous.
Daniel Vettori said Flynn won't be rushed back, but hopes he'll be available for the tour match against Northamptonshire starting on Friday. "We are quite protective of him. He hasn't been in a great space the last couple of days," Vettori said after his team went down by six wickets at Old Trafford. "He wanted to bat, but unfortunately it wasn't a good idea. We wouldn't have forced the issue.
"He's got some cosmetic surgery to have and it depends on how he recovers from that. Like I said, he wanted to bat, but the medical advice was saying it wasn't a great idea. But when he is cleared, I think it's a good idea for him to get straight back into it."
Jacob Oram also hurt his shoulder on the third day, though he was able to bowl as England chased down 294, while Jamie How played through the match with a fractured finger. How will miss the match against Northamptonshire, but is hopeful of continuing his tour. The third and final Test gets underway at Trent Bridge on Thursday week.
