Ishant Sharma, the India and Kolkata Knight Riders fast bowler, has spoken in favour of having just a single captain for the IPL this season, as opposed to coach John Buchanan's multiple-captain theory. Buchanan had proposed having four to five captains for the entire duration of the Twenty20 tournament, intended as a strategy for the future.
"It will be good for the team if we have only one captain," Ishant told reporters. "I don't know how having four captains will work."
Earlier, Ishant was quoted by a new channel saying "Sourav Ganguly is a good captain but sometimes you need new ideas which Buchanan theory can generate". But he clarified that it didn't necessarily mean he was embracing the multiple-captain theory.
"I never said that I supported John's idea," Ishant said. "I said that I was a just a player and it was up to the team management to decide what they can and cannot do. I can only follow what I'm told."
Buchanan unveiled his theory at a press conference last month in the presence of Ganguly, who led the franchise last season. Ganguly later said that he was not fully convinced about the idea, which also drew criticism from other coaches and former players like Sunil Gavaskar. Buchanan said his theory had been misunderstood by many people and clarified that he will "not select a squad captain but will select a captain for each match."
