Afghanistan batsman Karim Khan has been suspended for one match and his team-mate Mohammad Shehzad reprimanded following separate incidents during the team's defeat against Netherlands in Vanderbijlpark during the ICC World Cup Qualifiers match on Monday.
Karim was punished for inappropriate and intentional physical contact during the course of play, while Shehzad was caught for showing dissent at the umpire's decision.
The incident involving Karim took place during the third ball of the 38th over of Netherlands' innings. Karim tried to field the ball off his own bowling and collided with the non-striker in the process. As the non-striker tried to set off for a run, Karim tried to trip him with his right hand and he was later found guilty by the match referee Roshan Mahanama. He has the right to appeal, since it is a Level 2 offence.
"Cricket is a non-contact sport," Mahanama said. "Players must understand that intentional physical contact of this kind is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated."
Shehzad made 8 before he was dismissed lbw by the left-arm spinner Pieter Seelaar and he expressed his displeasure with the decision by showing his bat to the umpire, indicating an inside edge. Mahanama found him guilty of a Level 1.3 offence and also warned him about his future behaviour.
