Jason Gillespie has suffered another setback with a knee injury adding to his nervous wait for first Test selection news. Gillespie missed training on Tuesday due to problems with both knees and the discomfort has not helped his battle with Michael Kasprowicz for the third fast bowler's place at Lord's tomorrow.
"We expect him to train fully [on Wednesday]," an Australia team spokesman told AFP. "Jason had treatment for soreness behind both knees and was put on light duties."
While Brett Lee appears to have his named inked on the teamsheet, Gillespie and Kasprowicz started slowly during the one-day series and are Australia's only selection headache. Darren Lehmann has questioned whether Gillespie's years of hard work have worn him down at age 30.
"He's not in the form he'd like but his record speaks for itself," Lehmann, a South Australia and former Australia team-mate, told the Herald Sun. "He's always been the workhorse, bowling into the breeze, maybe that's catching up with him."
However, Gillespie said it was "nervous and exciting" waiting for the team to be named. "I know during the one-dayers I probably didn't bowl as well as I would have liked," he told AAP, "but the one-dayers have finished now and Test cricket and one-day cricket are completely different games." Gillespie has 248 wickets, the same number as Richie Benaud, but has missed a big haul in the last two series aginst Pakistan and New Zealand.
