Kadeer Ali, the England A batsman, has signed for Gloucestershire after deciding not to accept the offer of a new contract from Worcestershire. Ali, 21, had been frustrated by the lack of first-team opportunities at New Road.
Kadeer, the cousin of his Worcestershire team-mate Kabir Ali, featured in only five County Championship matches in 2004, in which he scored 181 runs at just over 22. He also played just two National League games, with a top score of 51.
He decided to move to Bristol after Worcestershire, where he was on the staff for five years, said they could not guarantee him first-team cricket. "I am delighted to be joining a club with such an impressive record, and it will no doubt help my cricketing aspirations," said Kadeer. "Obviously, it is sad to be leaving Worcestershire, but I feel it is now time for me to move on."
"Kadeer Ali has huge potential, he is only 21," said Tom Richardson, Gloucestershire's chief executive. "Although we are looking very much to be the future in signing him, we believe firmly he can also make an immediate impact."
