David Hay played four matches in three years for Oxford University, with his only score of any note coming in his final outing against Lancashire in 1938 when he made 96. He reached his fifty in even time, and appeared set for a "delightful" hundred when he tamely chipped to mid-on after an hour and a half. He had arrived at the university amid high expectations after establishing himself as a renowned schoolboy batsman at Geelong, and he hit powerfully all round the wicket. He was the grandson of William Moule, who had played for Australia in the first Test in England in 1880.
