Pakistan and India off to winning starts

Summary of Under-19 World Cup group matches

06-Feb-2006
Group A
Pakistan beat Uganda by eight wickets
Scorecard
Pakistan waltzed to a convincing eight-wicket win over Uganda, after dismissing their opponents for just 74. They rattled off the required runs in just over 12 overs, with Nasir Jamshed (35*) and Ali Khan guiding them to victory. The Ugandans faired poorly in their innings: only Raymond Otim with 13 and Emmanuel Isaanez with 10 made it into double figures, with extras top-scoring with 25. The seamers did the damage for Pakistan, with Jamshaid Ahmed and Akhtar Ayub both taking 3 for 15, while Safaraz Ahmed, Pakistan's captain took five catches behind the stumps. Uganda have little time to lick their wounds as they face New Zealand on Tuesday, while Pakistan's next match is against Bangladesh on Wednesday.

Group C
India beat Namibia by nine wickets
Scorecard
India made short work of Namibia, cruising past their total of 170 in 27 overs for the loss of just one wicket. Gaurav Dhiman was the man to fall, but only after he had hammered 90 from just 70 balls. Earlier, Namibia's Dawid Botha had led his side to a respectable score thanks to a fine knock of 61. That they recovered from the shaky position of 44 for 3 demonstrated their resilience, but a total of 170 was never likely to trouble the Indians. It was left to Cheteshwar Pujara (66*) and Rohit Sharma (10*) to seal the win for India, which arrived with a massive 22.5 overs in hand.
Group D
England beat Nepal by 77 runs
