Johan Botha has a strong chance of making his Test debut for South Africa in the third Test against Australia at Sydney on Monday. Botha, the 23-year-old offspinner, joined up with the South African squad in Melbourne after being drafted in with an eye on conditions at the traditionally spin-friendly SCG.
Botha took a step nearer a Test cap when Makhaya Ntini was ruled out with a knee injury, which has forced him the fly home, while there are still some doubts over Justin Kemp's shoulder problem which forced him to miss the Boxing Day Test. Botha could now form a two-pronged spin attack with Nicky Boje.
Haroon Lorgat, the convenor of the South African selectors, said: "I think he will give us more options to consider going into the Sydney Test with two spinners a possibility. Sydney is widely considered as a spin-friendly wicket and I think he could play a part in the match."
Botha made his one-day international debut for South Africa against India on the tour in November, less than a year after converting himself from a medium-pace swing bowler into a spinner following advice that he would get more opportunities.
