Anil Kumble who turned thirty five on October 17, feels as relaxed as ever and is looking foward to future endeavours.
Kumble admits he is keen to get to the 500 Test-wicket mark - he is currently on 465 - and hopes to keep playing for India for a couple more seasons. "It would be nice," he told The Hindu modestly. Currently recovering from a slight back injury that ruled him out for the first two one-dayers against Sri Lanka, Kumble is confident of being fit for selection soon. "I will be seeing John (John Gloster, Indian physio) in a couple of days. It's basically some stiffness in the back, which I aggravated after the Sri Lankan tour. I am training hard, and should be all right soon."
Speaking on the captaincy debate and the appointment of Rahul Dravid for the series against Sri Lanka and South Africa, Kumble was positive that his Karnataka team-mate is up to the task. "He is very focused, determined and disciplined. It will filter down to the side." Kumble sees Dravid as an influential force and very capable of leading the side.
He also welcomes the return of Sachin Tendulkar to the Indian team, which he believes is in a rebuilding phase. "It is not easy to return from a lengthy lay off caused by injury. I wish him the best of luck."
Reflecting on the role that legpin bowling plays in Test cricket, Kumble pointed to the example of Shane Warne, who became the first bowler to take 600 wickets. "He is the best spinner I have seen. It's heartening to see a leggie at the top. He's been great for the game."
Three matches short of 100 Tests, Kumble is glad that he has been able to contribute to Indian cricket.
