Ajit Agarkar, the Indian medium-pacer, is of the view that a full-time bowling coach could be of great help to the team. Speaking to the press in Bangalore, where a camp for fast bowlers is currently on, he talked about how India's bowlers benefited from Bruce Reid's presence on their last tour of Australia. "Reid being an Australian, it helped in those conditions. We haven't had a full time bowling coach after that really."
It's probably not a bad thing to have [a bowling coach]", Agarkar continued. "Because you never had a full-time bowling coach, it's tough to say whether it helps or not. But in Australia, Bruce Reid being an Australian, was a help".
Agarkar also dismissed the fact that he was being referred to as an allrounder. "I bat at No. 9. My primary job at the moment is to bowl. If I can contribute with the bat, it's always good", he said. "Being an allrounder, you need to be consistent and try and win games for the team either with the bat or ball. That makes you an allrounder. So every contribution with the ball is very important for me. I don't think I am classified as an allrounder." For the record, Agarkar has scored a Test century at Lord's and also has a 21-ball ODI half-century to his credit.
Agarkar also said it was good for the team that there were many bowlers vying for the fast-bowling spots. "Lot of guys are pushing each other; this will help the team. It's always going to be tough [to be in the team]. You have to push yourself further, take up the challenge and perform better."
