Fred Nicholas was a fine allround amateur sportsman who won Blues at Oxford for football and athletics, going on to play 11 times for England's amateur football side. He was a member of the Corinthians side which knocked Blackburn Rovers out of the FA Cup in 1923-24, and ran as a sprinter for his country.
He first played as a wicketkeeper and lower-order batsman for Essex in 1912, returning in the 1920s to captain the side, by which time he sometimes batted in the top three. In 1926 he had his best season, making 726 runs including his only hundred, 140 against Surrey at Leyton.
