  • Paul Reiffel chose no. 4 after his childhood hero, Royce Hart of the Richmond Tigers in the AFL
  • Steve Waugh was allocated no. 5 by his teammates who considered his recent feats (in 1995-96) resembled those of Geelong Aussie Rules player Gary Ablett.
  • Mark Waugh chose no. 6 in deference of rugby league's Terry Lamb for the Canterbury Bulldogs
  • Ian Healy chose no. 7 in honour of his good friend, Brisbane rugby league legend Allan "Alfie" Langer
  • Shane Warne chose no. 23 after wearing it at Under-19s level for St Kilda in the AFL and then handed over the number to Michael Clarke before the Chappel-Hadlee series of 2004-05 (23 was also worn by Michael Jordon who along with Warne and Clarke was sponsored by Nike).
  • Dean Jones chose no. 24 for his final appearance (Australia A v West Indies on January 10, 1996) because it was his birthday, March 24
  • Jason Gillespie swapped from no. 13 to no. 4 after the 2000 series against South Africa due to superstition.
  • Darren Lehmann swapped from no. 25 to no. 10 before the Chappell-Hadlee series in 2004-05 in honour of his childhood hero Barry Robran.
  • Andrew Symonds swapped from no. 39 to no. 63 before the Chappell-Hadlee series in 2004-05. The reason for this choice is unknown.
  • For reasons unknown, during the Australian tour of New Zealand in February 1998, Gavin Robertson wore no. 44 after wearing no. 43 just weeks earlier. Jimmy Maher had worn no. 44 in his debut a month prior also. Subsequently, Maher began wearing no. 46 whilst Robertson never played ODIs again. This mix-up was never acknowledged, with Mark Higgs later being allocated no. 44
  • Luke Pomersbach wore no. 17 with the nickname "D'Ball" on the shirt in his Twenty20 Internationl debut in 2007/08. His late call-up for Brad Hodge meant he had no shirt made for him and he wore Hodge's shirt for the match.
