A fast bowler who played four games for Western Australia as a 19-year-old, Earl Spalding became better known as an Australian rules footballer. He played 109 games for Melbourne and 102 for Carlton in the AFL, and was part of Carlton's 1995 premiership side. His tally of 12 first-class wickets included such leading batsmen as Aravinda de Silva, Sidath Wettimuny and David Hookes.
